BOSTON—The home of a famous 1773 tea party is revolting again, this time over coffee.
Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., told a crowd in Austin last week that the Trump administration is tightening safety standards for companies’ use of certain ingredients—including at Dunkin’ and its Seattle-based rival.
“We’re gonna ask Dunkin’ Donuts and Starbucks, ‘Show us the safety data that show that it’s OK for a teenage girl to drink an iced coffee with 115 grams of sugar in it,’” Kennedy said to laughter and applause. “I don’t think they’re gonna be able to do it.”
What killed in Austin drew a decidedly icier reception in Boston. After the Boston Globe highlighted the comments on Wednesday, locals snapped.
“Take it out of my cold dead hands,” said Molly Englert, a cybersecurity worker in downtown Boston, after picking up her iced latte on the way to the office Thursday.
